Wing Watchers: The Heartbeat Between Us

Introducing Wing Watchers, a new blog series sharing a director’s reflections from just beyond the stage.
Beyond the lines, choreography, cues, and curtain calls are the moments unfolding beneath the surface: the breath we hold from the wings, the courage we witness onstage, and the quiet, extraordinary ways young artists find their voices, grow their wings, and become more fully themselves beneath the lights.

The arts are community first. They are coming together to make great music while little brothers play arcade games nearby. Wearing the band tees your sister made. Watching your parents film from the crowd while your older brother brings out the big camera because every second feels worth remembering. They are your teachers dancing, jamming, and cheering the loudest while you play and sing your heart out beneath flashing lights in a haze-filled venue.
The drums vibrate through your chest. And for one moment, the entire crowd seems to move with one heartbeat. One rhythm. One beautiful moment together. Celebrating music, courage, and community.
Last night, our instructors performed. Our students stepped onto a stage that asked them to be bold. Our families gathered. Our students ventured into downtown Boise to support the arts and scream for the friends they have made through the arts.

And a local band took a chance. They trusted a group of thirteen-year-olds to open for them. They believed in them enough to share their stage, and I am not sure those young men fully understood the depth of the moment they created in the lives of those young musicians. Because sometimes someone believing in you, even before you completely believe in yourself, changes the rhythm of your story.
As I sat there soaking it all in, the most astounding part of the night was the beauty of this community. Three-week-old Kasper snuggled against Sharon just moments after her acoustic set brought every feeling to the surface. Tiny headphones softened the noise and gave him a few extra newborn-old-man wrinkles, but somehow, the heartbeat still found him.

The same heartbeat moving through the drums. Through his mother’s music. Through a room filled with people who came together because they believed the arts were worth showing up for.
Multiple generations gathered in the basement of The Shrine to raise money for the arts and help keep moments like these accessible. But they also gathered for the love of music, for the way it connects us, for the way it gives words to feelings we cannot always explain. For the way a rhythm can begin inside one musician and travel through an entire room until, somehow, none of us feels quite so alone.

Friends danced, headbanged, and jumped until they were breathless. They drank their weight in Shirley Temples and let the magic of live music suspend the worries of the world for a little while. For one night, we left the hard things at the door.
We listened as musicians spoke about mental health and the ways music can hold the things that feel too heavy to carry alone. And for one night, we breathed music that spoke directly to our souls. The drums kept beating, the crowd kept moving, and everyone was welcome.
Last night was about community. It was about lifting people up when they try something new and bold and scary. It was about cheers that stayed just as loud when a chord was missed or a lyric was forgotten, because the cheers were never for perfection.
They were for the doing, for the courage, for the racing heartbeat before stepping beneath the lights and the moment you realize an entire room is beating alongside you. For choosing to create, for the music itself, and within a community like this, the space is infinite.
There is room for every voice. Every instrument. Every style. Every generation. There is room to come as you are, to celebrate, to feel, to heal, to be inspired, and perhaps to leave brave enough to create something of your own.
Because every new voice adds something to the rhythm, every person who enters the room becomes part of its pulse.
This entire evening was the brainchild of our fearless instructor, our Coach, and forever mentor to so many students at Sound & Stage, Alex. The kids admire him because he never simply tells them who they should be. He shows them. He teaches chords and quarter notes, rhythm and timing, how to listen to the musicians beside you and how to find your place inside a song.
But somewhere between the notes, he teaches friendship. Kindness. Self-care. How to be a safe space. How to be the kind of person who supports others loudly and shows up when it matters.

And then he walks the walk. The teens watch him lead with compassion, create fearlessly, encourage endlessly, and make space for everyone around him. They are in awe because he is the guy everyone looks up to. The guy so many of these young musicians hope to be like someday.
And then he sits behind the drums, the first beat sounds and you feel it in your chest. Suddenly, they remember exactly why they wanted to make music in the first place.
That is the beauty of Sound & Stage, that is the magic of what is being built here. A community filled with artists working tirelessly every day to keep the arts alive, and to share the healing, restorative power of creating something together.
Every lesson adds a note, every brave first performance adds a rhythm, every person who chooses to show up for someone else keeps the heartbeat going.
In one moment, we were dozens of people gathered in a haze-filled room beneath flashing lights, surrounded by pounding drums and electric guitar riffs. And somehow, in that very same moment, we could have been gathered around a campfire with one guitar, singing beneath the stars.
Different instruments, different generations, the same heartbeat. Because gathering
together to make music is a tradition as old as time. Long before flashing lights and crowded venues, people gathered around fires. They played, they sang, they told their stories. And somewhere across all those generations, the rhythm continued.
It is storytelling, it is connection, it is memory, it is magic, and everyone is invited to become part of it.

So here’s to the music we have yet to play, to the songs we have yet to dance to, to the soft melodies still waiting to be written and the heavy guitar riffs still waiting to shake the walls. The voices still waiting to be heard and the stages still waiting for someone brave enough to step onto them.
There is so much music left to make, so much courage left to celebrate, so many heartbeats still waiting to find one another. We invite you to pull up a chair. Find your rhythm. Raise your voice. Become part of the song. Because the heartbeat is still moving.
From the drummer—to the musicians—through the crowd—and into whatever we create next!
The music is only just beginning.
