Seize the day and make some headlines this spring in our production of Newsies JR.! Students ages 11+ will rehearse Tuesday evenings, developing their acting, singing, dancing, and storytelling skills as they bring this inspiring, high-energy Broadway musical to life. With two full casts, every performer will have meaningful opportunities to shine, challenge themselves, and grow their craft in a supportive, ensemble-focused environment. Through powerful storytelling, dynamic choreography, and unforgettable music, students will discover the strength of their voices, the importance of standing together, and how even the smallest voices can make the biggest waves. From the first rehearsal to the final curtain call, we'll build confidence, friendships, and a community ready to seize the day!
The Whole Package
Newsies JR. is more than just rehearsing a show; it's stepping fully into the creative, collaborative, and educational process of bringing a Broadway musical to life!

Each week, performers will dive into scenes, music, and choreography while discovering that musical theatre is about so much more than memorizing lines and learning steps. Students will explore script analysis, vocal technique, music theory, character development, and the art of storytelling through intentional movement.

Inspired by the real-life Newsboys' Strike of 1899, this production also offers an exciting opportunity to bring history into the rehearsal room! Performers will explore turn-of-the-century New York City, the Industrial Revolution, child labor, journalism, and the power of collective action. Through historical research, dramaturgy, and character exploration, students will discover the real people and events behind the musical while learning how theatre can give a voice to history and inspire change.
And the learning doesn't stop at our weekly rehearsals!

Beginning in February, we'll offer optional Saturday evening bonus workshops dedicated to reviewing choreography, refining blocking, and diving deeper into character development and scene work. These additional rehearsals give students extra opportunities to strengthen their skills, ask questions, and explore their creative choices.
Our evening dance workshops are all about getting up, getting moving, and discovering the joy of musical theatre choreography! Students will explore rhythm, coordination, musicality, stage movement, and the ways dance can communicate emotion and advance a story. Whether they're seasoned dancers or just finding their feet, these workshops encourage performers to build confidence, challenge themselves, and have fun while developing the physical storytelling skills that make a show like Newsies JR. so exciting!

What if my student has no theatre or arts experience?
Perfect! Our program welcomes beginners and experienced students alike. Every class is designed to meet students where they are while encouraging growth, confidence, and creativity.
How are roles cast?
​Every actor is cast in the production. Auditions help us determine the best role for each performer and place them in one of our two casts. Our goal is to create a balanced production where every actor has meaningful opportunities to contribute and grow.
Are your instructors background checked and trained?
Yes. Every Sound & Stage Academy instructor completes a comprehensive background check before working with students. Our team also participates in ongoing professional development throughout the year, including child safety training, inclusive teaching practices, classroom management, neurodiversity and accessibility education, and age-appropriate developmental strategies. We believe great teaching means continually learning and growing alongside our students.
Every child learns differently, and we celebrate that. Our classes combine movement, discussion, visual arts, music, storytelling, hands-on projects, and collaborative learning so students can engage in ways that build on their strengths.
